Camp 3.5, Parakiwai Valley – near Whangamata

Objective
To practise off-track navigation skills, especially using compasses and reading maps.

Location
You will be camping in the bush at 1850461, 5868873. This is two hour walk from the end of Quarry Road. You must carry all your gear in the dark from the bus to the campsite.

Times
Bus departs Aberdeen Hall, Friday night 7.00 pm and Hillcrest Caltex at 7.15pm
Arrive back at the Were residence, Sunday 4.00pm.

Travel Pickup Places
Were residence: 6.30pm
Aberdeen School: 7.00pm
Hillcrest Caltex: 7.20pm

Food and Equipment
Bring your own food for the weekend.
- We suggest you try at least one or two new meal options
- Dehydrated food is real easy but with a little effort you can make much more interesting meals
- Include lunch and dinner for Saturday plus breakfast and lunch for Sunday plus lots of snack foods
You can sleep under a tarp or in a tent
Bring a day pack for Saturday
Pack for the usual day walk in the bush
- You must have ALL the compulsory day-walk items
- Bring your compass
You should be prepared for wet weather and colder nights

The Program
On Saturday a navigation exercise through (mostly) untracked bush
- This will be around 5km
The rest of the time for both groups can be used to explore this old gold mining area and enjoy the river

Warnings
On some ridges and streams there are cliffs – travel with caution
The rocks in the streams get very slippery when wet
If the river levels are up cross only if you consider it to be safe and with extreme caution.
Enter old mine tunnels with extreme caution
Watch for mine shafts in the bush
Watch for wasp nests
