YSAR Hamilton, Precamp Instructions,

Camp 1, Pirongia

Objective
To become familiar with the Kaniwhaniwha area of Pirongia Forest Park
To be introduced to terrain awareness, bivvy building and camping

Location
We will leave the bus at the end of Rolley Road and walk across the farmland for 15 to 20 minutes to the campsite.

Times
Depart Aberdeen School Hall, Aberdeen Drive, Saturday 8.30am.
Arrive back at the Were residence Sunday 4.00pm.
Variations of arrival time back in Hamilton to be notified by each YSAR member to their parent by phone or txt.

Food and Equipment
Bring your own food for the weekend.
- Bring two lunches, dinner and breakfast
- Bring lots of snack foods
- You can share cooking equipment with other members if arranged beforehand.

Bring a tarp or sheet of plastic to sleep under. You can share with one or two other members. Tents or tent flies are not permitted.
Bring a sleeping bag and, if you wish, a sleeping mat.
Be prepared for wet weather

Other items you will need: pencil and paper, torch, change of clothes, sunblock, insect repellent, antihistamines.

The Program
Commences on arrival at the campsite with bivvy construction
Followed by day and night navigation and orientation activities

Warnings
Take care on the river crossings - the rocks can be slippery
Watch for wasp nests
